JM Family Makes a $200 Million Statement About the Future of the Workplace

In Deerfield Beach, one of South Florida's most established companies has transformed its headquarters into a modern workplace designed around sustainability, collaboration and the changing expectations of its workforce.
In an era when companies are reconsidering where and how their employees work, JM Family Enterprises has made a substantial statement about the future of the corporate office. Rather than moving its headquarters to another city or reducing its physical footprint, the Deerfield Beach-based company made a significant investment in transforming the place it has called home for decades.
The result is a dramatically reimagined corporate campus, one that reflects a broader shift in how businesses think about the workplace. Completed in 2022, the redevelopment was initially valued at approximately $200 million and transformed JM Family's headquarters into an environment designed to encourage collaboration, promote employee well being and incorporate more sustainable building practices.
For South Florida, the project represents something important. While much of the recent attention surrounding the region's economic growth has focused on companies relocating from New York, California and other major business centers, JM Family offers a different perspective with an established corporate presence making a substantial long term investment in its existing South Florida home.
And it is an investment that goes well beyond additional office space.
From Traditional Office Buildings to a Modern Campus
JM Family Enterprises has been part of South Florida's corporate landscape since its founding in 1968 by automotive entrepreneur Jim Moran. Over the decades, the privately held company developed into a diversified business with operations spanning automotive distribution, financial services, franchising and specialty distribution.
Today, the company reports annual revenue of approximately $24.7 billion and employs more than 5,500 associates across North America.
Its headquarters redevelopment was conceived as a way to modernize the physical environment supporting that business.

The project, completed by Kaufman Lynn Construction in approximately 41 months, included three new office buildings, each measuring roughly 88,000 square feet. It also introduced a 29,500-square-foot dining facility, a large parking structure, a central energy plant and a welcome center.
But the most noticeable change may be the way the buildings and outdoor spaces work together.
Instead of creating a collection of conventional office buildings surrounded by parking lots, the design emphasizes pedestrian connections, landscaped pathways, reflecting pools and common gathering areas. The result has more in common with a university campus than a traditional suburban office park.
That distinction is increasingly relevant as companies reconsider what makes employees want to come into the office.
The Workplace as a Competitive Advantage
The debate over remote work has changed the way employers approach their real estate decisions. An office is no longer simply a place where employees sit at desks and perform their daily responsibilities. It is increasingly expected to provide something that cannot be easily replicated at home.
For companies seeking to attract and retain experienced professionals, the quality of the workplace has become part of the employment proposition.
JM Family's campus reflects that thinking. Its central dining facility, known as The Nest, serves as more than a place to eat lunch. It provides a common gathering space where employees from different business units can interact.
The campus also incorporates outdoor spaces intended to encourage employees to move around, meet colleagues and spend time outside the conventional office environment.
There is an important business consideration behind this approach. Collaboration, corporate culture and employee engagement are difficult to quantify, but they can influence an organization's ability to attract talent and maintain a cohesive workforce.
By investing in its physical environment, JM Family is making a statement about the continuing relevance of the workplace, even as the definition of work itself continues to evolve.
Sustainability Is Part of the Investment
The redevelopment also reflects a growing emphasis on environmental responsibility and operating efficiency.
Among the campus features are rooftop solar installations, heat-reducing electrochromic glass and a rainwater collection system that supports landscape irrigation.
The parking garage incorporates solar panels and rainwater storage infrastructure, while the campus landscaping and pedestrian pathways were designed with environmental considerations in mind.
These are practical decisions as much as architectural ones. Energy consumption, water management and building performance can have meaningful implications for the long-term operating costs of a large corporate property.
In April 2025, JM Family announced that its Deerfield Beach headquarters had earned WELL Gold certification, recognizing its approach to workplace health and employee well-being. Several office buildings also received LEED Gold certification, while The Nest received LEED Silver certification.

The WELL standard evaluates areas including air, water, lighting, nourishment, movement, thermal comfort and mental well-being.
The certifications provide an additional measure of the company's investment in creating an environment that considers not only how a building operates, but also how the people inside it experience the space.
A Different Kind of Corporate Investment in South Florida
JM Family's story is particularly interesting when viewed against the backdrop of South Florida's recent corporate growth.
The region has attracted considerable attention from companies relocating headquarters, establishing regional offices and expanding existing operations. Financial services, technology, healthcare and professional services businesses have all become part of the conversation surrounding Miami's economic evolution.
But corporate growth is not measured exclusively by the number of companies arriving from other states.
Established employers investing in their existing facilities are equally important. They provide continuity, support local employment and demonstrate confidence in the region's long-term business environment.
JM Family's headquarters is a case in point. The company did not need to relocate to make a major statement about South Florida. It chose to invest in its existing location, modernize its facilities and create a workplace intended to support its operations for years to come.
The project also reinforces the importance of Broward County in the broader South Florida business economy. While Miami often dominates discussions about corporate migration, Deerfield Beach and neighboring communities have developed their own substantial concentration of established employers and corporate facilities.
The Future of the Corporate Campus
There was a time when the success of a corporate headquarters could be measured largely by its size, location and proximity to transportation networks.
Today, the equation is more complicated.
Companies must consider employee expectations, sustainability, technology, operating efficiency and the role physical space plays in maintaining organizational culture. The office must justify the commute, provide opportunities for interaction and offer an environment that supports the people who work there.
JM Family's investment offers one interpretation of what that future might look like.
Its Deerfield Beach campus combines conventional office functions with amenities and environmental features that reflect a changing understanding of the workplace. It also demonstrates how an established company can modernize its physical presence without abandoning the community where it built its business.
For South Florida, that may be just as meaningful as the arrival of another corporate headquarters from outside the state.
The region's economic future will depend not only on attracting new companies, but also on retaining the businesses that have helped shape its growth over several decades.
In Deerfield Beach, JM Family has made a substantial investment in doing precisely that. And in a business environment where companies are constantly evaluating where they belong, the decision to stay and build something better can be as significant as the decision to move.
